MEDIATION AGENCY MOVES MANXWARDS
International mediation luminaries Dr Frank Hanna and Nancy Peterson, founders of The Mediation Agency (www.mediationagency.com), have relocated to the Isle of Man and confirmed the first in a series of mediation and conflict avoidance training courses in Douglas 5-12 October. The pair’s first introduction to the Island was a talk on mediation delivered by Frank to a packed PAG public meeting in June.
Offering true hands-on mediation experience, the 60 hour course at the Sefton Hotel in Douglas will be a revolutionary mix of innovative training techniques, real life case studies and question and answer sessions. Small group sizes ensure that each and every student receives highly personal tuition and achieves an in-depth and practical understanding of the subject. Delegates will arm themselves with skills invaluable both professionally and in everyday life - and the course counts for as much as two thirds of a degree in mediation.
Following his graduation from Harvard University as the world’s first doctor of mediation, Frank soon realised that no training provided students with real world mediation skills, so he developed his own unique teaching methodology that draws on every individual’s personality and existing skill set. He has successfully graduated over 600 mediation students in the US, including high profile figures such as a former Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and a former Head of BBC Daytime Television.
Frank comments on the course: ‘’Mediation training is for everyone, from every walk of life. The course will graduate students as mediators ready to practice in the commercial arena. However, it’s also beneficial for those with no inclination to change careers, as it will noticeably lower the incidence of conflict in the workplace, saving companies time and money. Mediation isn’t just an important workplace skill, it can also impact positively on home-life, and change people’s entire outlook.’’
The Mediation Agency has selected the stunning Sefton Hotel in Douglas, as a tranquil and inspirational setting for the course, where students can remove themselves from the everyday and immerse themselves fully in the intensive, life changing course. The choice of a base was underscored by a recent Legal Services Commission Report that strongly recommended mediation as an alternative to litigation when handling certain disputes.
Frank said: ‘’We’ve been welcomed so warmly since our move over here and we’re excited to bring mediation to the Isle of Man, as we’ve already experienced hugely positive feedback on the step change towards mediation as an alternative to litigation.’’
In addition to offering training in mediation, The Mediation Agency also provides consultancy services, resolving disputes between everyone from businesses to conflict in the community or within the family unit. Using an impartial third party, the mediators help address issues that are causing conflict, and offer a safe, unbiased forum for disputing parties to open constructive dialogue.
Dr Hanna is the author of Conflict Avoidance and Mediation in the Real World and has earned a reputation as a respected broadcaster and journalist. Nancy Peterson, is the author of the first mediation dictionary and has co-written a bachelors degree programme on mediation.
